Becoming Iphigenia raconte l’histoire de neuf jeunes femmes syriennes réfugiées en Allemagne pour échapper à la guerre et, pour certaines, à la société de leur pays. Venant de différents milieux et de différentes communautés en Syrie, ces femmes sont réunies sur la scène de la Volksbühne à Berlin pour jouer dans une adaptation moderne d’ Iphigénie d’Euripide, écrite par le dramaturge Mohammad al-Attar et mise en scène par Omar Abusaada. Grâce à son accès privilégié à cette troupe d’actrices non-professionnelles, Reem Al-Ghazzi filme les préparatifs, les répétitions, les discussions et la première de la pièce, mais aussi la vie de ces femmes en Allemagne en dehors du théâtre. Alors qu’elles passent de plus en plus de temps ensemble, les femmes découvrent que, bien qu’elles soient parties pour échapper à la douleur et à la mort, en réalité, elles les transportent partout où elles vont. Peuvent-elles échapper au passé, à la famille, à la société et à elles-mêmes ?
La projection de Becoming Iphigenia sera précédée d’une série de courts métrages par Reem AlGhazzi:

Reem Al-Ghazzi est une artiste et documentariste syrienne, née à Damas. Elle réalise et produit plusieurs documentaires courts en solo et collectivement. Ces films ont été primés au Festival International Du Film de Casablanca et celui d’Alexandrie, et ont été présentés au Cinéma du Réel à Paris et au Festival International Du Film de Locarno. Al-Ghazzi a aussi publié de nombreux textes et articles dans des journaux arabes. En 2010, elle fonde le Stories Film Lab, offrant des ateliers en réalisation de cinéma documentaire à travers la Syrie. Becoming Iphigenia est son premier long-métrage. La réalisatrice a remporté le prix Samira Al-Khalil en mars 2023 à Paris, en reconnaissance de “son œuvre cinématographique, le courage de ses approches artistiques, son influence sur la société et son dévouement à narrer la mémoire de Syriens invisibles.”

Becoming Iphigenia follows the story of nine young Syrian women who have fled to Germany to escape the war and, for some, to escape the society at home. They hail from different walks of life and from differing communities in Syria and were brought together on stage at the Volksbühne in Berlin for roles in a modern adaptation of Euripides’ Iphigenia written by playwright Mohammad al-Attar and directed by Omar Abusaada. Reem Al-Ghazzi had close access to the cast of non-professional actresses. She filmed the rehearsals, discussions, and premiere, but also the women’s lives in Germany, outside the theatre. As the women spent more and more time together, they discovered that though they had left to escape pain and possible death, they actually carried these wherever they went. Could they escape the past, family, society, and themselves?

Reem Al-Ghazzi is a Syrian artist and documentary filmmaker from Damascus. She has directed and produced several short documentaries individually and as part of collectives. Her films have received awards at the Casablanca and Alexandria International Film Festivals, and have been screened at the Cinéma du réel in Paris and the Locarno International Film Festival. Al-Ghazzi has also published several articles and texts in Arabic newspapers. In 2010, she established the Stories Film Lab, a series of documentary workshops held across Syria. Becoming Iphigenia is her debut feature. The director won the Samira Al-Khalil award in Paris in March 2023 “in recognition of her cinematographic work, the courage of her artistic approaches, her influence on society, and her commitment to narrate the memory of the invisible Syrians”.
